Coffee in my butt… Say what?

The idea to use coffee in my rear-end was never something I would even consider, until I went to the Gerson Institute in Southern California where I learned the benefits. At the institute I learned about Dr. Max Gerson’s therapy to treat cancer patients, people that have recovered from cancer and other illnesses, and people that just want to remain healthy and stay cancer-free. Coffee enemas are a main component of the Gerson Therapy. However, Dr. Gerson did not come up with coffee enemas. They actually started in WW1.

Quick Coffee Enema History:

During WWI, Germany experienced a shortage of painkillers and morphine, so the nursing staff began to give soldiers water enemas to help with pain and constipation. Meanwhile, the doctors were working around the clock and always had a coffee pot brewing. Since the coffee worked so well for the doctors and there was always a little coffee left over the nurses started using the remaining coffee for the enemas. Soldiers started to report some pain relief with the enemas. Following the war two Germans, who were interested in the coffee enema’s power started to do some research. What they found was that coffee enemas increased the production of bile and allowed the body to get rid of the toxins rapidly.

Years later Dr. Max Gerson, author of A Cancer Therapy, adopted this therapy to his patients regimens. Dr. Gerson paired the enemas with juices, a high potassium diet, and watched his patients cure from the inside out.

*Science Based Benefits of Coffee Enemas:

  1. Increased cell energy production

  2. Enhanced tissue health

  3. Improved blood circulation

  4. Better immunity and tissue repair

  5. Cellular regeneration

  6. Additionally, coffee enemas can help to relieve pain, nausea, general nervous tension and depression.

Doctors at the University of Minnesota proved that coffee enemas stimulate an enzyme system in the liver called Glutathione S-transferase by 600%-700% above normal activity levels. This enzyme reacts with free radicals (which cause cellular damage) in the bloodstream and makes them inert. This is good because these enzymes neutralize substances dissolved in the bile and are released through the bile flow from the liver and gallbladder, and are excreted through the intestinal tract. A Gerson patient holds the coffee enema in the colon for 12-15 minutes. During this time, the body’s entire blood supply passes through the liver 4-5 times, carrying out poisons picked up from the tissues. So the enema acts as a form of dialysis of the blood across the gut wall.

The purpose of the coffee enema is not to clear out the intestines, but the quart of water in the enema stimulates peristalsis in the gut. A portion of the water also dilutes the bile and increases the bile flow, thereby flushing toxic bile (loaded with toxins by the glutathione S-transferase enzyme system) out of the intestines.

Do you still think coffee enemas sound so weird? When I met a recovered cancer patient that went through the Gerson Therapy (She had cancer about 5 years before and she believed the new cancer was caused from her previous cancer treatments) she shared her story. She found it very entertaining that her friends supported her doing the “typical” cancer treatments with radiation and chemotherapy and they never questioned why she chose that, but when she shared with them her second time around that she would be sticking coffee in her rear-end they all were stunned and questioned her. Telling her “they couldn't believe she was doing that” and “yuck.” They made her feel like she was crazy, but she felt, what was crazy would be to put herself through constant vomiting, diarrhea, hair-loss and the many unpleasant side effects that come with chemo and radiation and she didn't want to go through that again. She said, “What blew my mind was the fact that sticking poison in my body was more acceptable than doing coffee enemas.” This lady was very funny and sweet. She was in her 70’s and full of energy. At the time I met her she was cancer free for about 10 years. I also met a 24 year old male who had stage four cancer and was given six months to live. His mom was a chiropractor and very open to alternative treatments. He decided to do the Gerson therapy, along with IV’s treatments of vitamin C (I still cannot find a doctor in the USA that will give high doses of vitamin C through an IV; Vitamin C has been proven to shrink tumors.) He went out of the country for this vitamin C treatment and attended a Gerson Clinic in Mexico. Within two years he shrunk his tumors down, they disappeared and he healed himself.

The lesson I learned from these stories and many others is that has their own way of dealing with illnesses, especially cancer. I think it's important that we all remain open to ways of healing ourselves and preventing cancer. I think Western medicine and Eastern medicine, when married together, can have compound healing effects on our bodies.

So are you ready to get started? There are different regimens and protocols for individuals that have had chemotherapy treatments, radiation treatments, people who have diabetes, and other illnesses, but for the average person trying to remain healthy here is a good start:

  1. Pick 1 day a week and do 1-3 enemas that day. Once you do your first one you will realize it is not that bad. I sometimes do one before work, but start on a day you can stay home until you know how your body responds. If you feel you are very toxic take 2-3 days and shoot for 3 enemas a day. Also remember you may feel worse in the beginning because your body is releasing the toxins. Trust me it gets better! If you are a cancer patient or have had cancer with traditional treatment in the past please email me before you start. Protocol for you is different than the average cancer-free person. Or you can get Dr. Gerson's book referenced below.

  2. Drink lots of water and add a juice on the day you do your enemas. Either a green juice or apple-carrot juice. Usually the therapy calls for 8oz of juice for every enema. The important thing is to replenish the fluids you lose.

  3. Do some research. Check out videos posted on Some videos will show you how to prepare the coffee and much more.

  4. Email me if you have questions.

Recipe for enema:

  1. Get medium roast, whole bean, organic coffee

  2. Have a coffee grinder

  3. Use a stainless steal pot and wood spoon

  4. Use filtered water

  5. For ever 1 quart of water you will use 3 tbsp of coffee (You can make a concentrated batch and just dilute when you are ready to use).

  6. Boil water and coffee on high for 3 minutes with lid on then stir every 30 seconds or so

  7. Then let simmer with lid on for 15 minutes

  8. After you will let cool and then strain liquid into a glass jar (mason jars are great)

  9. If you make a concentrated batch I store them in 16 oz jars (for up to 2 days) and then I add 12-16 oz of water to the coffee

  10. Use when liquid is at body temperature (I just stick my finger in coffee and if it doesn't really feel too cold or too hot I know it is just right).

  11. If you have coffee stored in your fridge take out and fill up a small pot with water. Place the glass jar with coffee in pot and reheat on high for 4 minutes (gas stove) or once your water is boiling place jar in water for 3-4 minutes. Take top off of mason jar before doing this.

  12. Once coffee is body temperature you will pour into enema bag

  13. Lay on your right side

  14. Insert enema and let it flow. Again check out Youtube videos for more tips.

*Common Questions by Rising Sun Yoga:

Q: If coffee is so beneficial, why not simply drink it?

A: Coffee taken orally goes through the stomach causing digestive problems and affecting the liver by shutting off the bile ducts. It also raises BP and often causes capillary spasms in the extremities. In other words, the gall bladder shuts down when one drinks coffee. Coffee enemas are not given to improve elimination but to stimulate the liver to release toxins.

Q: What Does the Coffee Enema Do?

A: The coffee enema has a very specific purpose: lowering serum toxins.

Q: Is there any scientific research to confirm the methods Dr. Gerson developed in the 1920s, specifically the coffee enema?

A: Three scientists from the Dept of Pathology at the University of Minnesota, showed that rectal coffee administration stimulates an enzyme system (glutathione S-transferase) in the liver, which is able to remove toxic free radicals from the bloodstream by increasing this enzyme 600% to 700%.

Q: Is there other evidence to support Dr. Gerson's entire Program?

A: In the late 70s, the physicist, mathematician, and biophysicist Freeman Widener Cope, MD wrote: "The high potassium , low sodium diet of the Gerson therapy has been observed experimentally to cure many cases of advanced cancer in man." In another paper, Cope wrote: in cell damage of any kind, "first the cell will lose potassium, second the cell will accept sodium, and third the cell will swell with too much water, inhibiting energy production along with protein synthesis and fat metabolism."

Robert Good, MD known as "the father of modern immunology" was surprised to see animals responding to a no protein diet much faster than the conventionally accepted method of high protein diets.

Professor Harold Foster, University of Victoria, British Columbia concluded that 'spontaneous regression' (a partial or complete disappearance of a tumor in the absence of orthodox treatment) was far from spontaneous, and were categorized as such by orthodox medicine b/c it was the result of unconventional - alternative and complementary - therapy.

Carmen Wheatley of the Orthomolecular Oncology Group in the U.K. performed studies based on Michael Gearin-Tosh experience with multiple melanoma in 1994.

You may be asking why is there not a clinic in the USA? That is because for many years, states had laws stating that is was illegal for any doctor to treat cancer using any method other than chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Recently, a few states have begun to recognize alternative healthcare and begun to allow it with some oversight. In general, acceptance of alternative treatments is hard to come by. Not much has changed over the years even with this "recognizing of alternative treatments," in my opinion. Alternative care in some states is allowed only after traditional treatment has failed, aka: you have limited time left and are very ill. Don't expect your insurance to cover a treatment like the Gerson Therapy, even though this therapy has been proven to work, and in many cases better than chemo. I have met Gerson patients and it is frustrating to witness. I was offered an additional “Cancer” insurance at my worksite recently and when I asked about it covering proven treatments, such as the Gerson Therapy or the Burzynski treatment (Dr. Burzynski is in TX) the representative said, “No, you will not receive a benefit for treatment in another country and “Alternative” treatments, which Dr. Burzynski’s treatment has been called (check out the documentary: The Truth About Cancer) would only be covered if my existing doctor showed I need “Alterative” treatment. Meaning traditional treatment was not working… aka: only after I got sicker and I tried chemo and radiation and whatever else is mainstreamed, then I might be covered.

Again, I think there is great value on both western and eastern medicine. I just wish people didn't have to chose based on “what my insurance will cover.” Some of the best treatments for ailments cost little like: aspirin, peroxide, coffee enemas, massage, Bio-resonance therapy, essential oils and many others. Be open to finding what works for you. You know your body better than anyone. Listen to your body and give your body the opportunity to heal itself with good nutrition, exercise, and a weekly coffee enema!-Anna
